Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Simons , -ize suffix.
Etymology: < Simon- (in Simons, the surname of the inventor: see note at sense 1) + -ize suffix.In form Simoniz after Simoniz (1919 or earlier), the proprietary name of the protective polish.
Originally and chiefly U.S. Now somewhat rare.
1. transitive. To apply a (typically protective) polish or wax to (a car, boat, etc.). Also (occasionally) intransitive.Originally used with specific reference to a carnauba wax-based polish manufactured by the Simons Manufacturing Company, co-founded by the U.S. inventor and entrepreneur George Simons, which was later given the proprietary name Simoniz; subsequently used with reference to the application of waxes or polishes more generally.The advertising slogan recorded in quot. 1920 was in widespread use until the late 20th century; the intransitive use of the verb which it illustrates, however, does not appear to have been widely used outside this slogan.
