Origin: Partly a borrowing from Yiddish. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by conversion. Etymons: Yiddish shvits ; shvitz v.
Etymology: Originally (in sense ‘sauna, steam bath’) < Yiddish shvits (feminine noun), probably < German Schwitze (feminine noun) place where a person sweats (18th cent. or earlier) < schwitzen shvitz v. In later use perhaps also partly < shvitz v.Compare Yiddish shvitsbad sauna, steam bath ( < shvits- , combining form of shvitsen shvitz v. + bad ( < Middle High German bad bath n.1)), after German Schwitzbad (1691).
North American colloquial.
Esp. in Jewish usage: a sauna, steam bath, or bath house; (later also) an instance of using a sauna or steam bath.
