Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French abonné.
Etymology: < French abonné (1832 or earlier), use as noun of past participle of abonner to enrol as a subscriber (1606; 1268 in Old French in sense ‘to fix a limit’) < Old French a- a- prefix5 + bonne bound n.1 Compare earlier abonnement n.
A person who subscribes to a periodical; a season-ticket holder at the theatre. Also in extended use. Cf. abonnement n.
