Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: Sinitic adj.
Etymology: Apparently a variant or alteration of Sinitic adj. (although this is first attested later), perhaps after other adjectives in -etic , in which -et- is part of the stem (e.g. Tibetic adj., Ossetic adj.). In quot. 1849 also after German †sinesisch Chinese (see Sinesian adj.). Compare French sinétique (1845 or earlier; rare).
Chinese. In early use often with wider reference to East Asian peoples viewed as constituting a single racial or cultural group with China at its centre (cf. Sinesian adj.). Cf. Sinitic adj. 1.
