Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin Sinae , -ese suffix, -ian suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Sinae (plural), denoting the inhabitants of East Asia (see Sinaean adj.) + -ese suffix + -ian suffix. Compare earlier Chinesian adj. (with slightly different sense). Compare also earlier Sinaean adj., Sinitic adj., Sinetic adj., etc.Compare French †sinésien (1826 as the byname of a French scholar of Chinese, apparently an isolated use) and also German †sinesisch (adjective) Chinese, †Sinese (noun) Chinese person (both early 18th cent. or earlier). Compare also post-classical Latin Sinensis Chinese (see Chinenses n.).
Of or relating to the peoples of East Asia, when viewed as constituting a single racial or cultural group with China at its centre.Not in established use after the early 20th cent. Occasional later examples have a more restricted reference to Chinese-speaking countries (e.g. in quot. 2018).
