Etymology: < Yiddish blintse, either < Upper Sorbian blinc, plinc (perhaps via German Plinse (1562 as blinze)), or < a cognate of this in an East Slavonic language (compare Russian (regional) blinec, Ukrainian blinec, Belarusian (regional) blinec, all in the sense ‘pancake’: see note).Further etymology. The Slavonic nouns are < the Slavonic base of Russian blin pancake (see blini n.) + the Slavonic base of Russian -ec , suffix forming nouns. Specific forms. Use of monosyllabic blintz, blinz as singular forms reflects reanalysis of the plural form blintzes as showing a plural morpheme -es . In the plural form blintsy (apparently occasionally reinterpreted as a singular: compare blintsies and also β. forms at blini n.) after the Slavonic plural forms. The -er in the (singular) form blintzer represents the final unstressed vowel of the Yiddish noun.
