Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of the name of Morris Simmonds (1855–1925), German pathologist, who described the disease in 1914 ( Deutsch. med. Wochenschr. 12 Feb. 322) + disease n., after German Simmondssche Krankheit (L. Lichtwitz 1922, in Klin. Wochenschr. 16 Sept. 1877/1). In β. forms < the name of Morris Simmonds + disease n., after German Simmondssche Krankheit.Simmonds was born in the Danish West Indies, but emigrated to Germany with his family in his childhood.
Medicine. Now chiefly historical.
A disorder resulting from severe damage to the pituitary gland, resulting in progressive dysfunction or failure of the gonads, adrenal glands, and thyroid gland, with weakness and loss of weight and body hair.An acute form of this disorder, typically occurring in women who have experienced haemorrhage during or after childbirth, was later called Sheehan's syndrome.
