Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin signētur, signāre; Latin signā, signāre.
Etymology: Originally shortened (as a graphic abbreviation) < classical Latin signētur, 3rd person singular present subjunctive passive of signāre sign v.1 In later use perhaps also partly shortened (as a graphic abbreviation) < classical Latin signā, imperative singular of signāre.The source cited in quot. 1690 also uses classical Latin signētur, but not signā.
Medicine.
In a prescription, as a direction to the person preparing the medicine: ‘let it be labelled’, ‘label it’, indicating that the text that follows (usually in the form of usage instructions to the patient) should be written on the label. Cf. signature n. 8.
