Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shtum.
Etymology: < Yiddish shtum < Middle High German stum silent, mute (Old High German stum , German stumm ), cognate with Middle Dutch stum , stom (Dutch stom ), Old Saxon stumm (Middle Low German stum ) < an ablaut variant of the Germanic base of stammer v.The β. forms show remodelling after German stumm. With to keep shtum at main sense compare earlier to keep silent , to keep mum at mum adj.
colloquial (British and in Jewish usage).
Silent; quiet; not saying a word. Esp. in to keep (or stay) shtum.
