Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shtibl.
Etymology: < Yiddish shtibl small house, chamber, room, (specifically) small (especially Hasidic) prayer house < Middle High German and early modern German stubel , stublīn , (with regular i-mutation of the stem vowel) stübel , stübelīn small room (German Stüblein ) < stube chamber, room (see stove n.1) + respectively -el and -elīn, suffixes forming diminutives.In plural forms in -lach, -lech after the Yiddish plural form shtiblakh.
In Jewish usage: a room or building, typically one which is relatively small, used by (esp. Hasidic) Jewish people for communal prayer, study, and community activities, as distinct from a larger formal synagogue.
