(also short sass) U.S. regional (chiefly New England) (now historical and rare) vegetables that are short or rounded in form (such as potatoes, turnips, etc.), as distinguished from those with a more elongated shape, such as carrots, parsnips, etc. (see long sauce n.); cf. sauce n. 2a.
