Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili simba.
Etymology: < Swahili simba lion, courageous person, invincible warrior.With sense 2 compare the following passage, apparently showing the Swahili title Simba-mwene (lit. ‘lion-chief’), cited in an English context:1849 Church Missionary Intelligencer Dec. 182/2 ‎The arrival of the Simba wa Muéne..as Kméri is styled—was announced on a sudden. The use denoting fighters of a faction in the Congo civil war reflects the widespread use of Swahili as a lingua franca in that country.
Chiefly in African contexts.
1. A lion. Occasionally also used of other big cats.
