Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French simagrée.
Etymology: < French simagrée (now chiefly in plural) airs affected in order to deceive, play-acting (13th cent. in Old French), grimace (17th cent.), of unknown origin.For discussion of some suggestions as to the etymology of the French word, which all encounter formal or semantic problems, see Französisches etymol. Obsolete. rare.
Probably: a grimace; an affected facial expression.Apparently found only in Dryden.
