Etymology: In Middle English use either a phonetic variant or parallel form of blast v. < Old English *blǽsan , Old Norse blása , etc. to blow. In sense 2 it was invented by Van Helmont, probably with a reference to the same root; compare his other term gas n.1 and adj.
Obsolete.

Forms: 1900s– blas, 1900s– blás (nonstandard).
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Irish. Partly a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymons: Irish blas; Scottish Gaelic blas.
Etymology: < Irish blas and Scottish Gaelic blas mode of pronunciation, accent (both 19th cent. or earlier), specific use of blas taste, flavour (Early Irish blas, earliest as mlas), cognate with Welsh blas taste, flavour (12th cent.), further etymology unknown.The form blás arose within English, with the length mark being added erroneously, apparently because it was regarded as characteristic of Irish orthography.
