Etymology: < shop n. + house n.1In shophouse of blasphemies in quot. a1627 ultimately after Byzantine Greek βλασϕημίας ἐργαστήριον (6th cent. in Evagrius Scholasticus). With use with reference to South Asia compare Chinese (Hokkien) tiàm chhù ( < tiàm shop + chhù house) and also Malay rumah kedai ( < rumah house + kedai shop).
