Etymology: < Yiddish shidukh < post-biblical Hebrew šiddūḵ negotiation, especially of an arranged marriage < šiddēḵ to arrange a marriage (see shadchan n.).In plural form shidduchim after the Yiddish plural form shidukhim, itself after the Hebrew plural form šiddūḵīm.
A marriage or prospective match according to Jewish custom; spec. a marriage or match arranged by a shadchan (shadchan n.). Such matches are now typically sought or arranged by strictly Orthodox Jews.
