Etymology: Old English sceaftmund (only once), < sceaft shaft n.2 + mund hand, handbreadth. (Probably sceaft was intended to denote the extended thumb.)Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈshaftment.
Obsolete exc. dialect.
The distance from the end of the extended thumb to the opposite side of the hand, used as a measure = about 6 inches.
