Etymology: < Italian bombola (1618 denoting a glass vessel; now usually denoting a gas cylinder), of uncertain origin; perhaps compare Byzantine Greek βομβυλη oil-flask.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
A flat-bottomed glass flask used for subliming camphor.

1840 J. Pereira Elements Materia Medica II. 790 The vessels in which this sublimation is effected are called bomboloes (bombola, Ital. βομβυλιὸς). They are made of thin flint glass, and weigh about 1 lb. each.
1852 C. Tomlinson Cycl. Useful Arts (1854) I. 286/2 Spheroidal vessels, called bomboloes. They are made of thin flint glass..and measure about 12 inches across.
