Etymology: Old English scearn neuter corresponding to Old Frisian skern (modern West Frisian skern , North Frisian sjaarn , sjuarn ), Middle Low German scharn , Old Norse skarn (Swedish, Danish skarn ) < Germanic *skarno-m , a passive participial formation on the root *sker- : skar- to separate (compare share n.3, shear v.). Northern dialects have the form scarn ( < Old Norse skarn).
