Etymology: Russian, perhaps shortened < sharashkina kontora ‘a bureaucratic or questionable organization’, but possibly ironic (compare Ushakov 1940, in Tolkovȳĭ Slovar′ Russkogo Yazȳka: sharashka, a hard object or stick for beating).
Now historical.
In the U.S.S.R.: a prison camp in which scientists and other specialists were held in conditions thought comfortable or luxurious by others in the prison system. (Soviet prisoners' slang.)
