Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sextārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin sextārius, measure of capacity (see note) < sextus sixth (see sext n.1) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare sextar n., sextary n., and sester n.As a liquid measure, a sixth of a congius (congius n.); as a dry measure, a sixteenth of a modius (modius n.). In Middle English also unchanged in the plural.
