Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sextāns.
Etymology: < classical Latin sextāns (see sextant n.); later (in sense 3) adopted in post-classical Latin by J. Hevelius in Uranographia (1687) 29. Compare quadrans n. and later sextant n.The use of the Latin genitive case form as postmodifier in names of stars and constellations is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin. The word was evidently reborrowed in the late 16th cent., and there is no continuity of use with the Old English.
