Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sexennis , -ate suffix1.
Etymology: < sexennis after an interval of six years (see sexennary adj.) + -ate suffix1, after septennate n. Compare earlier sexennium n.There is apparently no equivalent term in German. The 1898 law incorporating a six-year plan to build a fleet is usually referred to in German historiography as Flottengesetz or erstes Flottengesetz, literally ‘(first) fleet law’.
German History
A period of six years. Chiefly (with capital initial) with reference to a German parliamentary act of 10 April 1898 permitting the creation of a restricted naval fleet over a six-year period. Also more fully sexennate act, sexennate law. Cf. septennate n. 2.
