Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili -shenzi.
Etymology: < Swahili -shenzi uncivilized (in e.g. mshenzi member of an uncivilized community, plural washenzi , also used by coastal communities as a derogatory term for the inhabitants of the interior; compare quot. 1910 at sense A.).The Swahili plural washenzi has also sometimes been borrowed into English, with specific reference to the inhabitants of the interior of East Africa; compare:1860 R. F. Burton in Jrnl. Royal Geogr. Soc. 1859 29 89 The Washenzi throughout this portion of East Africa have organized certain customs which have grown to laws.
