Etymology: < Hebrew šĕmini ʿāṣereṯ, lit. ‘eighth (day which is an) assembly’ (occurring three times in the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures, denoting the day following the last day of the festival of Sukkot: Numbers 29:35, Nehemiah 8:18, 2 Chronicles 7:9) < šĕmini eighth ( < šĕmoneh eight + -i, suffix forming ordinal numbers) + ʿăṣereṯ assembly ( < ʿaṣār to hold back, to keep in).The α. forms reflect an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the second element of the Hebrew term.
