Etymology: < Middle French sexagesime Sexagesima Sunday (1380; French sexagésime ) and its etymon < classical Latin sexāgēsima (see Sexagesima n.). With sense A. 2 compare earlier sexagesm n., sexagene n., and Sexagesima n. 2.The β. forms seem to suggest a Middle French etymon ending in -esme , -ème (compare -ième , suffix forming ordinal numerals: see quatorzeim n.). No such word is attested, but compare Middle French quadrageme Quadragesime n. The form sexagesme (compare quot. 1483 at sense A. 1) may simply be a typographical error. Compare also sexagesm n.
