单词 sex-
释义

sex-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: 1600s– sex-, 1800s se- (rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sex-.
Etymology: < classical Latin sex-, combining form (in e.g. sexangulus sexangle n., sexennis : see sexennary adj.) of sex six < the same Indo-European base as six adj. Compare sexi- comb. form, sexti- comb. form, and also hexa- comb. form.Attested earliest in borrowings and adaptations of classical Latin and post-classical Latin words, first in the 16th cent. in sexangled adj., sexangle n., then more frequently from the 17th cent. (e.g. sexennial adj., sexpartite adj.). A number of more recent adaptations in sense 1a are after scientific Latin, where the combining form was used, chiefly in biological nomenclature, from the mid 18th cent. (e.g. sexfidus : see sexfid adj.). Formations in English are found from the late 17th cent. (earliest in sexmillennial adj. at sense 2, sexfoil n.) and become common in the 19th cent. Chiefly used in scientific or technical formations. Usually with second elements ultimately of Latin or occasionally of Greek origin. Some formations have corresponding forms in sexi- comb. form and occasionally in hexa- comb. form. Examples in French are rare, the earliest appear in the mid to late 16th cent. in Middle French (e.g. sexangulaire sexangulary adj., sexangone : see sexagon n.) and are borrowed < Latin. Formations within French are found from the mid 18th cent., and some have been adapted into English (e.g. sexdigitism n. at sense 1a, sexdecimal adj.).
