Something sold for or worth sevenpence, esp. a pocket-sized clothbound book, typically a reprint of a popular novel still in copyright, one of a series of such volumes aimed at the mass market. Cf. sixpenny adj. and n. 3c.Scottish publishers Thomas Nelson and Son released the first volume in their series Sevenpenny Library of Copyright Novels in May 1907 following the success of their Sixpenny Classics; the format and pricing were widely imitated by other publishers of fiction in the years before World War I.
