单词 seven-league
释义

seven-leagueadj.

Brit. /ˈsɛvnliːɡ/, U.S. /ˈsɛvənˌliɡ/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: seven adj., league n.1
Etymology: < seven adj. + league n.1, originally in seven-league boots, after French bottes de sept lieues, a recurring motif in fairy tales (see note). The French term bottes de sept lieues is first attested in 1692 in a work about fairy tales by C. Perrault, and appears shortly afterwards in several of his stories, such as La Belle au Bois Dormant (1696) (Sleeping Beauty) and Le Petit Poucet (1697) (Hop o' my Thumb or Tom Thumb). It has been suggested that it originated as a name for the sturdy leather boots worn by postilions on stagecoaches in the 17th cent., seven French leagues then being the average distance between staging posts in France; however, given the apparent lack of 17th-century evidence for bottes de sept lieues in that sense and the early appearance of the expression in tales which feature e.g. seven sons and seven daughters, this explanation seems doubtful.
1. Designating imaginary or hypothetical footwear that enables the wearer to travel an extremely long distance very rapidly and unimpeded by any obstacle. Originally and chiefly in seven-league boots. With allusion to fairy tales such as Tom Thumb, in which an ogre or giant owns a pair of magic boots which enable the wearer to cover a distance of seven leagues (see league n.1) at each step.
Frequently in figurative contexts.
