Etymology: < post-classical Latin Servitae, plural (1523 in Erasmus, or earlier) < classical Latin servus servant (in post-classical Latin Servi Beatae Mariae (plural), the formal name of the order (13th cent.)) + -ītae (see -ite suffix1).Compare Italian servita (perhaps 15th cent.), Middle French, French servite (1584 or earlier), German Servit (1614 or earlier).

A friar, nun, or lay member of the Christian religious order also known as the Order of Servants of (the Blessed Virgin) Mary (Ordo Servorum Beatae Mariae Virginis).The original order of mendicant friars is traditionally said to have been founded in Florence in 1233; two associated orders of nuns were founded in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
