Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French serviette.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French serviette towel, table napkin (1361; French serviette ) < servir serve v.1 + -iette , variant of -ette -et suffix1. In later use (in sense 2) reborrowed < French serviette portfolio, briefcase (1848), sense development (originally slang) of serviette towel, table napkin. With the Scottish forms in sch- and sh- compare similar forms at service n.1
Originally Scottish.
1. A rectangular (usually square) piece of cloth, paper, etc., used at a meal to wipe the fingers and lips and to protect the clothes; a napkin. Formerly also occasionally used of pieces of cloth used for other purposes, e.g. to protect a tablecloth or the surface of a table or sideboard. After originally being an exclusively Scottish usage, with a broad range of referents, the word retained some currency in Scottish contexts until the 18th century, when instances of the reborrowing of the word from French, as a synonym for napkin (in sense 1a), begin to be found, and this sense subsequently predominated. It remains relatively uncommon in U.S. English. From the late 19th century the use of serviette (as an alternative to napkin) began to be deprecated by some language commentators; a typical example is H. W. Fowler Mod. Eng. Usage (1926), which lists it as a ‘genteelism’. Sc. National Dict. (at Servit) records the β. forms as still in use in Caithness, Fife, and Lanarkshire in 1970.
