U.S. (a) the official flag of a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces; (b) a flag (typically featuring a white stripe or rectangle on a red field), flown by a family or community, which bears one blue star for every member of it who is engaged in active military service and one gold star for every member who has been killed while serving; cf. blue star n., gold star n. 2.
