Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. A borrowing from Latin Perhaps also partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Latin septima, septimus; German Septime.
Etymology: In sense a < German Septime (in music) a seventh (1719 or earlier in this sense) or its etymon post-classical Latin septima (1635 or earlier in this sense), use as noun of feminine of classical Latin septimus seventh < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit saptama , ancient Greek ἕβδομος , Old Church Slavonic sedmŭ , and Old Prussian septmas . In sense b independently < classical Latin septima, feminine of septimus, adjective, after octave n.2 1.

Etymology: < French septime (1845 or earlier in this sense) < classical Latin septimus seventh (see septime n.1), after other French fencing terms: prime prime n.2, tierce tierce n.1, quarte quarte n., etc. Compare prime n.2 3b, seconde n. 2, tierce n.1 6, quarte n., quinte n., octave n.2 4.
Fencing. The seventh guard position, used by a right-handed fencer to protect the lower left quarter of the body, with the weapon held on the left side of the mid-torso with the sword hand palm up and the point of the blade lower than the hand; a parry in this position.The position is reversed by a left-handed fencer.Now only used in foil and épée fencing.
