Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin septanus, septana.
Etymology: As adjective < post-classical Latin septanus recurring every seventh day (1553 or earlier) < classical Latin septem seven (see septem- comb. form) + -ānus -an suffix, translating Hellenistic Greek ἑβδομαῖος (in πυρετὸς ἑβδομαῖος septan fever (Galen)). As noun < post-classical Latin septana (1544 or earlier), use as noun (short for febris septana seventh-day fever) of feminine of septanus , adjective. Compare quintan adj. and earlier quartan adj. 1a, tertian adj. 1.Compare Middle French septain, French septan (16th cent. in Paré, subsequently from the early 19th cent.), Spanish septano (1495).
Medicine. Now historical and rare.
