Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French servante, servir.
Etymology: < French servante side table (1746 in this sense; first half of the 14th cent. in Old French or Middle French in the sense ‘female servant’), use as noun of feminine present participle of servir serve v.1 N.E.D. (1912) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (sęrvāṅt) /sɛrvɑ̃t/.
1. In France or French contexts: a side table on which food and drink are set out so that diners may help themselves, without the need for servants.Such tables were particularly popular in the 18th cent.
