Etymology: < sensitive adj. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier sensitivist n.In sense 2 after Dutch sensitivisme (L. van Deyssel 1891, in De nieuwe gids 6 423, in a review of H. van Gorter's Verzen).
1. Susceptibility or responsiveness to emotional or aesthetic impressions. Cf. sensitiveness n. 2a, sensitivity n. 2d. Somewhat rare.
