单词 seruyaunt
释义

seruyauntadj.n.

A spurious word (intended to represent serviant) introduced twice by Lord Berners in his translation of Froissart's Chronicles, apparently through misreading Middle French sermenté ‘pledged’ (13th cent. in Old French as sairementé) and its ulterior etymon serment ‘oath’ (see serment n.) as, respectively, seruienté and seruient.Entered in N.E.D. (1912) under the headword serviant. In quot. 15251 Berners seems to have taken the word as an adjective (compare servant adj. and later servient adj. 2). In quot. 15252 it is apparently understood to mean ‘oath’.
