Origin: From a proper name; modelled on French lexical items. Etymon: proper name Bohemia.
Etymology: < the name of Bohemia, a region and formerly a kingdom in central Europe (see Bohemian n.), after French Bohême, the name of the country (see Bohemian n.), and French bohême, bohème (masculine) Romani person (first half of the 15th cent. in Middle French), person of irregular life or habits involved in the arts (1830), bohème (feminine) such people viewed collectively (1830; see Bohemian n.). With the collective use in both senses compare -ia suffix1 (and compare e.g. suburbia n., academia n. 2).
1. Socially unconventional, artistic people viewed collectively or as a community; an area inhabited or frequented by people of this type. Cf. earlier Bohemian n. 3.
