Etymology: As a military term in the 16th cent., apparently < French serré , †sarré , past participle of serrer (see serr v.), already adopted in Middle English as sarray adv. (see also sarraly adv.). In recent use, a back-formation < serried adj.
1. intransitive. To press close together in the ranks; to stand or move in close or serried order.
