Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: sensation n., -or suffix, sensate v.
Etymology: Originally (i) < sensat- (in sensation n.) + -or suffix, after ancient Greek αἰσθητικός aesthetic adj. In later use also partly (ii) < sensate v. + -or suffix.
1. That which is responsible for sensation; (in later use also) a sentient being. Obsolete.In quot. 1900 with reference to telepathy.
