Etymology: < self n. + -ness suffix. With sense 2 compare earlier selfhood n.; in quot. 1611 after French †mesmeté (1587 in Middle French).
1. Self-centredness; egotism; selfishness. Also occasionally with neutral sense: due regard for oneself. Formerly also as a count noun: †an instance, act, or example of selfishness (obsolete). Now rare.
