Etymology: < ancient Greek σηματ-, σῆμα sign (see sema n.) + -ology comb. form.With sense 3 compare earlier semasiology n. 1.
1. The art of interpretation by signs. Obsolete. rare.

1680 G. Dalgarno Didascalocophus Introd. Man has invented Sematology; that is, an Art of impressing the conceits of the mind upon sensible and material Objects... Sematology then being a General name for all interpretation by arbitrary Signs, [etc.].
2. The branch of knowledge concerned with signs, esp. in relation to thought and knowledge; the study of signs; semiotics. Chiefly in or with reference to the work of Benjamin Humphrey Smart (?1786–1872). Smart focused primarily on linguistic signs (cf. quot. 1839), hence there is sometimes overlap with sense 3.
