A person, animal, or thing which moves by means of its own inherent power or energy, rather than by the action of external forces. Also (in later use chiefly) in philosophical contexts: an individual, soul, etc., capable of voluntary or spontaneous action. Cf. first mover at mover n.1 1c, prime mover n. 1.
