Etymology: < Anglo-Norman segnour, Old French seignor, -eur (modern French seigneur , a Common Romanic word = Provençal senhor , Spanish señor , Portuguese senhor , Italian signore < Latin seniōrem , accusative of senior elder (see senior adj. and n.). Compare seigneur n., señor n., signor n., sir n., sire n., all ultimately of the same etymology.

a. In early use, synonymous with lord n. and int.; a person high in rank or authority, a ruler, a feudal superior; the lord of a manor. Now rare, and chiefly as a more vernacular substitute for seigneur n. in speaking of a French feudal noble.
