Etymology: < a Cariban word (compare Arekuna akuurii , Macusi akuri , both in sense ‘agouti’) corresponding to Guarani akutí agouti n. Compare earlier agouti n. Compare also earlier acouchi n.¹ (although this denotes a different, but related animal).It is unclear whether the word originated in a Tupi-Guarani or a Cariban language, as there has been much borrowing between these groups in the field of plant and animal names.
