Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: self n., -hood suffix.
Etymology: < self n. + -hood suffix. Compare slightly later selfness n.Compare German Selbheit self-centredness, selfish behaviour (already in Middle High German), Selbstheit individuality (already in Middle High German as selbesheit ), self-centredness (late 18th cent.). In several quots. translating the German mystical theologian and philosopher Jacob Böhme (1575–1624: see quots. 16491, 16492 at sense 1, 1649 at sense 2) also used to translate German Ichheit self-centredness, selfish behaviour (already in Middle High German as icheit ; end of the 18th cent. in sense ‘one's personality’), Meinheit personal individuality (already in Middle High German as mīnheit ), and Eigenheit peculiarity (see ownhood n.).
