Etymology: < self- prefix + insurer n., after self-insurance n. Compare earlier self-insured adj.In quot. 1853 after German Selbstversicherer (1803 or earlier).
A person or company that has self-insurance (self-insurance n.).In quot. 1853: a person who covers his or her own losses.
