Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Blétonisme.
Etymology: < French Blétonisme (1784 or earlier) < the name of Barthelemy Bléton , a French peasant (fl. 1780) reputedly talented in divining for water + -isme -ism suffix.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈBletonism.

1821 Monthly Mag. 51 315 Bletonism is a faculty of perceiving and indicating subterraneous springs and currents by sensation; the term is modern, and derived from a Mr. Bleton, who for some years past has excited universal attention by his possessing the above faculty.
