单词 seriema
释义

serieman.

Brit. /ˌsɛrɪˈiːmə/, U.S. /ˌsɛriˈɛmə/, /ˌsɛriˈeɪmə/
Forms:

α. 1600s– cariama, 1800s– çariama.

β. 1800s siriéma, 1800s– seriema, 1900s– seriama.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin cariama, Portuguese seriema.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin cariama ( W. Piso & G. Marcgrave Hist. Nat. Brasil. (1648) 201, also as scientific Latin Cariama , genus name ( M. J. Brisson Ornithologie (1760) V. 516)), apparently originally an error for Portuguese seriema (1618 as siriema ; also ceriema ) < Tupi sari'ama < sari , çari crested + am raised, standing, up. With the form çariama compare Portuguese çariama (1894 or earlier; rare). In β. forms directly or indirectly < Portuguese seriema, siriema. Compare French seriema (1822 or earlier), German Seriema (1823 or earlier).
Either of two large, long-legged terrestrial birds constituting the family Cariamidae, found in open country in South America; esp. (more fully crested seriema or red-legged seriema) Cariama cristata, which has a red beak and legs, and an erectile frontal crest.Traditionally allied with the cranes and bustards, the seriemas are now often placed in their own order, Cariamiformes. In the early literature there was some confusion with screamers of the family Anhimidae (see screamer n. 3a).
