Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sēricum , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin sēricum silk (see Seric adj.) + -in suffix1. On the motivation for use in sense 1 see quot. 18411. In sense 2 after German Sericin (J. Schlossberger 1859, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 110 245). With the α. forms compare -ine suffix5.

Mag. 18 103 The fat obtained as described above is oxide of glyceril in combination with a fat acid, which, as far as I am aware, has never hitherto been described. It has a beautiful white silky appearance. From this property (which is shared also by the acid derived from it) I propose to call it Sericine (from the Latin word serica).
